King Tai
Design + Build

An abandoned single-story brick building sat vacant for years a few blocks from Palmer’s house. It was just steps away from the community garden and faced south with sun drenching it most of the day. Palmer was intrigued by its proportion and, having been a long time resident of Crown Heights, had always dreamed of building a business there.

History

Through research and city archives Palmer realized the space had been occupied first by a tailor, and then by a Chinese American “Fish Kitchen” in the 80’s named King Tai. He decided this little building could serve as a comfortable, local watering hole. Palmer enlisted the help of his longtime friend and collaborator, Dane Risch, to help him flush out a plan to build a sunny bar. With a combination of Danes effortless hospitality and Palmer’s talent for design, King tai was born. It would express the fresh breeziness of the garden mixed with an aspirational beach getaway feel of a bygone era. A small place that would be an invitation to this transportive magic to anyone that lived nearby.
